Motivation

Volume III, Num. I

2–3 minutes

Related Bible Verses:

  • Luke 17:10

Today marks the final day of a four-week long stretch of leading volunteer teams on site. The regular busyness of ministry has been made more difficult by losses and bereavements that our team and partner churches have been facing. There have been more goodbyes than the weekly which we say to our volunteer teams. Some staff have finished their service with us. Some friends have gone to be with Christ.

Through all these things, the Lord has been teaching me that, in order to continue ministry, my dependence on Him must always deepen, and my motivation for serving Him must be clear and strong.

‘“What motivates your serving?”

It is not for our sake that we serve God—not for attention or accolades or an experience. It is not for our partner churches’ sakes that we serve. It is not even for the sake of the homeowners who lost everything in Helene. We must serve God for God’s namesake and glory alone, with no demand for return.

And in God’s incredible mercy, not only does He allow us to be a part of His work, but He is also transforming the lives of the homeowners, partner churches, and our team as we strive to give Him glory!

God does not owe us anything as a result of our service. We are only humble servants, doing what we have been told. It is all about Him! Yet I find that my motivation to serve is often mixed with a desire for accolades, attention, or space in someone’s memory.

I pray that my motivation for serving can simply be pure, whole, and undivided devotion to bringing God glory as I grow to love and know Him more.

Luke 17:10

“So, you also, when you have done everything, you were told to do, should say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.”
